01

Shortening and hemming

Choose the shortening service that matches your garment and read its description. Suit trousers, casual trousers and jeans can have different hem constructions. Tell the tailor if you want to retain a turn-up or discuss the look of an existing jeans hem before ordering.

02

Specify the measurement correctly

Use the instruction type requested by the service. “Shorten by 2 inches” means remove 2 inches; it does not mean the final leg length should be 2 inches. If giving a finished measurement, confirm the measurement points with the tailor and state the unit clearly.

03

Consider the shoes you will wear

The intended shoes affect where a trouser hem sits. Decide the length while considering your usual footwear. Do not copy a clothing size label into an alteration request: a size label and a measured finished length are different pieces of information.

04

Waist, seat and leg fit

Taking in the waist, changing the seat and tapering a leg are separate alterations. Explain where the fit needs to change instead of asking for a garment to be made one size smaller. Substantial fit changes may need an in-person fitting or an assessment before the tailor accepts a postal order.

05

Check the finish you want

Mention details such as turn-ups, visible stitching, side seams or distressed areas. Do not assume a standard shortening price includes a specialist finish. Reference photos and a clear description help the tailor assess the request.

06

Order and send securely

Sign in, open Online Tailor and check the available jeans or trouser services. Confirm the instructions, price and return delivery, then follow the order confirmation when posting. Include the order number so the garment can be matched to your instructions.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

Can I request an original jeans hem?

Ask whether that finish is suitable and available for your jeans before booking. State the finish you want explicitly; a standard shortening service may use a different method.

Can trousers be made longer?

It depends on the fabric available inside the hem and the existing construction. Ask the tailor to assess this before ordering; a garment cannot always be lengthened.

Do waist alterations need a fitting?

They may do, especially when the seat or other parts of the fit also need attention. Discuss the change first so the tailor can decide whether a postal order is appropriate.
