01

Identify the part that needs attention

Explain whether the issue is sleeve length, jacket shape, trouser length, lining or a damaged seam. Include front, back and detail photos where useful. “Make the suit fit better” needs a conversation rather than a single measurement.

02

Sleeve length and cuff details

Jacket sleeves may have working buttonholes, decorative stitching or other details that affect how they can be shortened. Tell the tailor about these features before choosing a service. Confirm the method and price instead of assuming every sleeve is altered in the same way.

03

Trouser hems and turn-ups

Suit trouser shortening can be a separate job from jacket work. Specify the desired hem style and follow the measurement instructions. If the trousers have turn-ups, tell us whether you want them retained and check the suitable service before ordering.

04

Body shape and shoulder changes

Alterations to shoulders, chest or jacket balance can be more involved than simple length changes. They may need the suit fitted on you. Discuss substantial resizing first so the tailor can assess what is practical and whether an in-person appointment is needed.

05

Linings, wear and repairs

Describe torn linings, damaged pockets or worn seams separately from fit changes. The condition of the surrounding fabric can affect the repair. Use the clothing repair guide to prepare photos and questions before sending a jacket.

06

Confirm the complete job

Check which garments and tasks your order covers. A jacket alteration does not automatically include the matching trousers. Confirm the work, instructions, return address and delivery charges before packing the items listed in your order.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

Can all suit alterations be done by post?

No. Work that depends on how the whole suit sits on your body may need a fitting. Book only the postal services offered for your garment and contact the tailor about complex changes.

Can I post only the jacket from a suit?

If the confirmed order is for the jacket alone, follow that order’s instructions. Ask first if matching trousers or another garment is needed for assessing the fit or finish.

Should I buy a suit in the wrong size and alter it?

Discuss the proposed changes with the tailor before buying. Construction and available fabric limit what alterations can achieve, particularly at the shoulders and chest.
